In most states including Colorado, a medical marijuana caregiver is a person that provides medical marijuana (medical cannabis) to patients. Each state has their own definition of what a caregiver is but in general it is the person who provides the care and medical marijuana to their patient. In California, a medical marijuana caregiver is a designated individual that “has consistently assumed responsibility for the housing, health, or safety of [the] patient.” So in California a medical marijuana caregiver must provide cannabis and also assume one or more of three listed responsibilities. Each state is different and it is important to know those differences if you move to another state.

In Colorado, a medical marijuana caregiver is a person other than the patient or the patient’s doctor. They must be eighteen years or older and have significant responsibility for managing the well-being of a patient who has a debilitating medical condition. Each patient can choose one primary caregiver, who can legally grow, posses, and distribute to the medical marijuana to the patient as necessary.

Caregivers may have any number of patients as long as they meet the requirements stated above. In order to become a primary caregiver in Colorado the patient can to do one of two things:

  • Name the primary caregiver on their registry application, OR
  • Inform the state registry in writing of their primary caregiver at any time as long as they have a valid registry card.

Once the patient chooses one of the options above, the caregiver’s name and address will appear on the patient’s registry ID.
